Supervisor: Executive Pastor

Role: The Associate Pastor of Discipleship and Outreach serve to lead and cultivate spiritual growth within the church through intentional discipleship, biblical counseling, and outreach efforts. This role focuses on equipping leaders, fostering community through home groups and ministries, and expanding the church’s reach both locally and globally. The ideal candidate is relational, Bible-centered, and passionate about seeing people grow in Christ and live on mission.

The Associate Pastor of Discipleship and Outreach is one who is gifted in administration. The Associate Pastor will be one who loves people, has a passion for management, and sets goals to see the practicality of ministry flourish under the guidance of secure organization. He is gifted and skilled in working with lay leadership and strategic planning, he has a hunger for the Word of God, and a desire to see the congregation live out the Great Commission with consistent and practical steps.

Job Responsibilities & Duties

Discipleship:

Foster a culture of spiritual formation and gospel transformation by leading efforts that help individuals deepen their faith, connect in biblical community, and become disciple-makers.

●       Biblical Counseling & Compassion Ministries

o   Provide biblically grounded individual, marriage, and family pastoral counseling.

o   Lead compassion ministries and support groups addressing emotional and spiritual needs.

o   Establish a network of lay and certified biblical counselors and maintain appropriate referrals.

o   Maintain or pursue biblical counseling certification (e.g., ACBC, CCEF).

●       Leader Development

o   Identify and disciple the future leaders within the church.

o   Design leadership development pathways for group and ministry leaders.

o   Mentor lay shepherds and create systems for sustainable leadership multiplication.

●       Men’s and Women’s Discipleship

o   Guide gender-specific discipleship ministries with clear biblical direction.

o   Partner with volunteers to facilitate Bible studies, mentoring, and growth events.

o   Encourage intergenerational discipleship relationships.

●       Spiritual Formation & Events

o   Plan retreats, workshops, and events that promote spiritual growth and unity.

o   Encourage and teach personal spiritual disciplines.

o   Integrate spiritual formation strategies throughout all ministries.

●       Assimilation & Church Life Integration

o   Lead efforts to help new attendees become connected, committed members.

o   Oversee welcome teams, new member classes, and follow-up processes.

o   Develop systems that support long-term engagement and belonging.

Outreach:

Champion the church’s mission beyond its walls by cultivating a missional culture that reflects Christ’s call to the Great Commission. This includes leading initiatives that mobilize the church to serve, evangelize, and build lasting relationships in local, national, and global contexts.

●      Community Engagement & Evangelism

○       Develop and implement strategic outreach initiatives tailored to meet the physical, emotional, and spiritual needs of the local community.

○       Regularly assess community needs and identify opportunities for the church to engage in meaningful and sustainable ways.

○       Train the church in evangelism and gospel-centered conversation.

○       Organize and promote outreach events such as service days, seasonal ministries, and neighborhood prayer outreach.

○       Build ongoing partnerships with local schools, nonprofits, and civic organizations to establish the church as a trusted community resource.

●      Missional Culture Development

○       Inspire a church-wide mindset that sees every member as a missionary in their context—home, workplace, school, and neighborhood.

○       Integrate outreach principles into all ministry areas, equipping leaders and volunteers to be missionally intentional.

○       Celebrate outreach stories and testimonies regularly to highlight the impact and encourage continued engagement.

●      Missions Mobilization

○       Lead the church’s vision for missions—local, national, and international—by identifying strategic partnerships and opportunities for long-term impact.

○       Recruit, train, and support individuals and teams for short-term trips, mid-term assignments, and long-term mission work.

○       Oversee the mission’s coordinator for missionary care, communication, and support systems to ensure ongoing connection and encouragement.

●      Leadership & Volunteer Development

○       Create teams of volunteers who own and lead key outreach ministries.

○       Provide training and mentorship for outreach leaders to sustain and multiply ministry efforts.

○       Evaluate and improve outreach programs for effectiveness, alignment with church values, and gospel impact.

Pastoral Care

  • Assist the pastoral team by providing weekly shepherding care to the members of OBC through consistent meetings, follow-up, and communication for increased discipleship of her members. Also aids in crisis intervention and prayer for others. 

  • Assists the pastoral team in assimilating newcomers weekly to OBC by following up with YES Cards, inviting them out to lunch, and building relational bridges so that they are met with relational care.

  • Participates and assists in worship services, special services, and events. This includes the ability and qualification to lead the church in the Lord’s Supper and Baptism.

  • Other pastoral duties as assigned.

Personal Qualifications & Expectations:

  • Possesses personality, temperament, and interpersonal skills to relate and serve effectively within a multi-generational, congregation setting.

  • Exhibits evidence of Christian character and servant leadership based on the requirements from 1 Timothy 3:1-7, Titus 1:5-9, and 1 Peter 5:1-4.

  • Gives evidence of a spiritually mature life in the areas of prayer, Bible study, rest, worship, and financial stewardship.

  • Agrees to the Ottawa Bible Church Doctrinal Statement and Constitution.

  • Possesses a minimum of 5 years ministry/church experience, minimum bachelor's degree and has completed or in pursuit of a seminary education.
